Members of the British Martial Arts Academy Musical Forms Team ( Team Evolution Coached by the Musical forms Legend Ashley Beck ( Triple World - European and British Forms Champion ) which are all on the WAKO Musical Open hand and Weapons forms squad travelled to Austria for the Austrian Open Classics 2009 (One of the biggest in Europe with approximately 1600 competitors)

Under the guidance of Master Instructors Brian and Ashley Beck, They entered the musical forms and weapons sections and won a staggering 14 medals (6 Gold, 6 Silver, 2 Bronze) These were won between 8 Competitors and the age range of these medal winners was between 10 and 20 years of age.

Winners are as follows;

Jack Griffiths Age 10 yrs old won 2 Gold Medals and also making his day even better by beating the I.S.K.A. and WKA World champions giving him the added bonus of beating these two top performers’,

Jack is on this years WAKO Junior Squad, his first ever WAKO Europeans We know that jack will do well and probably bring in 2 more medals for WAKO GB in Croatia,

Chloe Michael age 13 yrs old has only been doing open hand forms for around 1 year and weapons a little bit longer, she did a very good weapons form but made a little mistake which put her into Silver medal position, In her open hand form she completed a good form but was beaten by team mate Emily Thew , giving Chloe a Bronze medal.

Emily Thew age 14 yrs old and also the reigning WAKO European 16 – 18 yrs old champion

did two brilliant forms giving her Gold medals for both open hand and weapons ,Beating all other competitors in her section she felt on top of the world so she went up another category to compete in the Ladies weapons section and did another very good performance giving her Silver medal ,

Georgia Shaw age 13 years old who has just joined Team Evolution 4 months ago did a good open hand form but had to settle for 4th place after drawing with a German competitor ( she lost by 0.1 ) but I am sure she will be back with vengeance !

Ross Chatterton who at just 15 yrs old holds the Junior world title for forms winning this prestigious title last year in Portugal , Ross is fast becoming one of the best weapons performers in the world , his weapons are the Kama, His weapon work and manipulisation of the kama is unbelievable , He had everyone screaming and shouting for him as he performed his brilliant weapons form giving him Gold medal in the 13 - 15 yrs old boys category, Nothing could stop this young guy going another step further by also winning his open hand category

He also like Emily was buzzing and went up another category into the men’s weapons section where he did another fantastic form being beaten by 0.3 by Americas top form competitor

 Marc Canonizardo,

Oliver Bonnington also age 15 yrs old had to settle for 2 x Silvers loosing out to team mate

Ross, Oliver was in fine form going through his forms routines and will surely win medals for WAKO GB in Croatia.

Kirk Bytheway 18 yrs old who has just moved up into the men’s section put on two good forms routines, But was up against some stiff opposition from all over the world with 12 more competitors to try and beat , Kirk did 2 good forms and came 9th in the open hand where there was only 1.8 between these top 9 competitors , In the weapons form Kirk did a good sword form he was placed 6th out of 10 competitors well done Kirk !!

The ladies open hand category was well attended and the reigning WAKO World champion

Jessica Holmes was getting back into competition after nursing a hip injury for the last 2 years

Jessica is now going to a top hip specialist to help her get back to full competition strength ready for the WAKO Worlds in France this year.

Jessica did a brilliant open hand but was pipped into Silver medal position by just 0.2 by the top American ladies champion Caitlin Dechelle

This was a good competition for Jessica as she now knows what she has to do to beat her in the forth coming WAKO Worlds, which I am sure she can do if she continues to train like she is,

In the Ladies weapons category Jessica’s Bo routine was going beautiful , brilliant manipulisation , very good stances , strikes and everything needed to win was in this weapons form then 4 – 5 seconds from the end of her form she dropped her bo,

I am the WAKO World Chief referee for the musical forms and being one of my own students does not make my job any easier, I had to tell the 5 judges to deduct 1.0 full mark which places Jessica in Bronze position , if she had not have dropped her Bo she would have definitely won the Gold medal , but as everyone says the big one is the worlds , That’s the one to win ,

I have a saying in my academy, (You are only as good as your last competition)

I have to say that team Evolution is without doubt the best forms squad in Europe,

If they keep on training like they have done this last 6 months I am sure that they will all bring back medals at the WAKO World & Europeans 2009

Not only did she do it but she did it in style. Italian Valeria Mercurio made the journey to Great Britain with her coach and an Italian World class judge and prepared for the battle.

The full story of the fight and some amazing pictures wil be featured in Augusts 2009 Fighters magazine.

The fight went the distance but Karen showed, fitness, strength and stamina and scored perfect 10's on the Italian, Latvian and British Judges scorecard.

A truly amazing performance and it just goes to show that all the extra hard training paid off. Karen would like to thank all her friends and family for their support and for also coming on the evening to spectate.
